Q: How Much is enough Bandwidth?

A: BandWidth Explained

Bandwidth is the amount of traffic that is allowed to occur between your web site and the rest of the internet.

If you have a home page on your website that is 45 KB (kilobyte) in size and one person visits your home page, you will have used 45 KB of bandwidth. Now say you have 1,000 visitors to your site in one day, you would have to multiply that 45KB by 1,000 because it was accessed 1,000 times. That would total 45,000 KB or 45 MB (megabytes).

Let's take it one step further and say you have 1,000 visitors per day, every day for a month. You would multiply that 45,000 KB or 45 MB by 30 (for 30 days in a month). That would equal 1,350 MB or 1.35 GB (gigabytes).

Most websites have more than one page on their site. Suppose you have just 4 pages and each person visits all four pages of your site. (Note that this will seldom happen, but they will probably visit more than one page.) You would take the 1.35 GB time 4 pages and that would equal 5.4 GB.

You can see that just by having files on your website and people visiting your site, you are utilizing bandwidth.

That is the most simple example. However, if you have files to download or are using audio or video, the bandwidth for that will be even greater.

If you were to transfer a 4MB file MP3 song from a web site to your computer, you would create 4MB of traffic, or bandwidth, between the web site you are downloading from and your computer. Depending upon the network connection between the web site and the internet, the transfer may occur very quickly, or it could take time if other people are also downloading files at the same time.

If, for example, the web site you download from has a 10 MB connection to the internet, and you are the only person accessing that web site to download your MP3, your 4 MB file will be the only traffic on that web site. However, if three people are all downloading that same MP at the same time, 12 MB (3 x 4 MB) of traffic has been created. Because in this example, the host only has 10 MB of bandwidth, someone will have to wait. The network equipment at the hosting company will cycle through each person downloading the file and transfer a small portion at a time so each person's file transfer can take place, but the transfer for everyone downloading the file will be slower.

If 100 people all came to the site and downloaded the MP3 at the same time, the transfers would be extremely slow. If the host wanted to decrease the time it took to download files simultaneously, it could increase the bandwidth of their internet connection (at a cost due to upgrading equipment).

Video files eat up even more space. A one megabyte video file represents only seconds of video. For a half hour presentation, your video file could easily be over two hundred megabytes in size! At that size, one gigabyte would only allow you to offer five downloads to your visitors. What you plan to do with your website most definitely will affect how much monthly bandwidth you anticipate needing.

The Formula

The main difference between the basic and expensive plan of any hosting provider is the differece in the amount of bandwidth per month. Most hosts will define the bandwidth amount in GB (Gigabytes; 1 GB = 1,000 MB). Below is an easy way to calculate the amount of bandwidth you will need for a month.

Total visitors a day X page views X average page size X 30 (number of days in a month).

Here's an example for a site with 1000 visits a day, 4 page views per visit, and a page size of 45 KB (kilobyte):

1000 X 4 X 45 KB X 30 = 4,500,000 KB = 4,500 MB = 4.5 GB

This web site would require a plan with a minimum of 4.5 GB of bandwidth a month. However, to allow for growth, it would be wise to choose a plan with excess bandwidth, in case there is an unusually large amount of visitors in a month.
